news posted on Fri, Oct 09 2009 by The Cecil
The new release of Ubuntu is just weeks away, expected on October 29th.

As an avid Linux user im very excited to see the new features planned and being tested out for the 10.04 LTS release next April.

check out the beta now if you're interested and try out the final release on the 29th.

why should i use linux? cause i've never used it.

SELL IT TO ME.
Posted by The Cecil on 2009-10-09
cause everything about it is pretty much... FREE!!

its more organized than windows and equal in sexiness to mac osx with a bit of configuratoring.

it uses ext3/ext4 file system which never has to be defragged.

almost all software is opensource/and or free. aside from a handful of useful commercial stuff.

its cons are basically that it doesnt support windows programs and is not really a gaming platform (nothing a dual boot or virtual machine cant fix) and it can be confusing to noobs at first. if it doesnt work out of the box with all your hardware, it can be a pain to get working.

other than that its a good OS replacement, hobbytastic.

more organized than windows? like how?

i just autodefrag so i don't really care...

what kind of software? i know gimp and stuff is on there but is there anything else notable? i hate openoffice.

is there a really awesome good reason to use it instead of windows 7?
Posted by The Cecil on 2009-10-10
well it isnt for everybody. im interested in it. and i love new releases.

instead of windows 7? not sure. havent tried w7 yet. need to though. i have the beta just not a dvd to put it on.

i would never actually say use it "instead" of something else.

i still primarily use windows, but i dual boot linux. most of the time i delete that partition once i lose interest, but i try out every new release and gain more interest every time.

its fun to try to say the least.

Seems just like yesterday was Hardy Heron. :P

doesnt it? i didnt quite like jaunty jackelope. it looked nice but it lost a lot of what made the previous ones good. especially since my graphics card went legacy. but i guess i just have to accept that fact.

on another note. jon. running linux also helps in cross platform development. but i guess that holds no value to you atm. but it WILL!! if you get serious into that kind of stuff anyway.
Posted by Jon_Lambert on 2009-10-13
oh, i WILL. so okay.

also recommend fedora 11, debian 5, and linux mint 7.

new to the scene i would probably back up everything on your comp before you mess with partitions n stuff. OR just install it on an old compy. :)
